If Only Politics had the Slightest Bit of Logic These Days

Democrat V. Republican? It should be Viewpoint V. Viewpoint

I'm just a 19 year old college kid so what do I know about politics? Not a whole lot, and that's precisely my point. Politics is all a game now, Liberals and Democrats spending the majority of their time bashing the opposing viewpoints whether they believe them or not and Republicans and Conservatives doing likewise; it's like all they want to do is advance their own party or get re-elected and they care absolutely nothing about the wealth, prosperity, and well being of the United States. This party game needs to end and the viewpoint game needs to begin.

I am proud to say that I am not a democrat

I am proud to say that I am not a republican

I have my own personal views that I have taken because they make the most sense to me, not because a the repulican party says that they are best.

Like Sheep on a Bandwagon

I'm a pro-life, atheistic, death penalty supporting, big business kind of guy, who prefers a smaller government, supports gay marriage, the right to keep my own money, national health care opposing, paradox. When I tell people that I support gay marriage, they go on about Obama like he is our savior assuming that since I strongly support one thing liberal I support all things liberal (I certainly don't) and when I oppose national health care people rant about how Obama is the anti-christ who isn't even an American citizen assuming that I am a democrat-hating republican (and I certainly am not).

Basically what I am saying is that I am a moderate, and I think if you think about yourself, you are probably a moderate too. Sure there will be people who tend to lean on the conservative side, and of course there will be some who lean liberal, but overall, any logical and educated person will plant themselves in the middle on many issues, realizing that what this country needs is not a fascist or a communist to lead us but instead someone who thinks things through and makes his or her decisions based on the needs and wants of the general populace. Based on this argument, I believe that parties should be completely abolished altogether.

If we had people running against each other without supporting a specific party, this country would incur myriad advantages For example:

No more divided country

As it stands the country is divided roughly into two parts, with the left overs falling into the extraneous parties. We have the liberals who loudly back any democrat despite his views, and we have the conservatives who do the same for republicans. Without parties, sure it would be clear who leans one way and who leans the other, but there would be no "party" for them to affiliate with, and therefore no blind backing by their party members.

Candidates can run on principle

Right now, with the parties having so much power over the candidate when it comes to money and campaigning, he may have to make promises to them just so that he can stay in the race, regardless of whether or not he believes that it is the right thing to do. This basically makes the party the pimp, and the candidate their cheap whore. We need to end this game and make it so that people can run on their own principles instead of being forced to back their "party."

Another hugeproblem that I have in the politics game at the moment is the libel that candidates throw at their opponents all over their ads on TV. When you watch the ads, the majority of them are aimed at spewing slander about their fellow candidates instead of telling you their own views. I think the government should go so far as to make this illegal, here's why.

I want to know your views, not his problems

I'm sure you were watching some of the ads during the most recent election. McCain ads just tried to make Obama look like a terrorist or a communist, and Obama ads tried to make McCain look like a withering old man who would just be another Bush. They almost never said anything about their own personal views.

Context

Most of the things that they showed on those ads we never got any background information for. We may have heard Obama say "spread the wealth" a million times but I don't recall ever hearing what he said before or after that. Same thing with McCain, they said that he backed Bush a lot, but they only cited 1 or 2 bills that he actually did back him on.

What I'm basically trying to say here, is that candidates should run based on what they believe this country needs. They need to think with their minds instead of their money, and they need to all stop slamming their opponents in an effort to raise themselves.

If we saw their views displayed more like they are on this graph below, and then they elaborated on them during interviews, press conferences, and debates, we'd all know much more about how our country is going to be run before the president got elected. And wouldn't that be a nice change?

Your thoughts?

Do you think that people should associate with parties or just identify with their own views?

  • parties all the way
  • viewpoints only: parties should be abolished
  • I'll stick to my ideas, you stick to yours
